LOUIS STEVENS

Louis Stevens is an Australian composer and multi-instrumentalist with particular interests in music for multimedia. With a compositional outlook concerned with the complexities of human relationships, Louis’ music evokes emotion-based experiences for his audiences. Louis takes inspiration from the post-minimalist style that gives emphasis to textures, expressive uses of colour and the bridge between electronic and acoustic sound-worlds. 

 

Louis completed a Bachelor of Music (Composition) with Honours at the University of Melbourne under the esteemed Australian composer, Elliot Gyger graduating as Valedictorian of the 2018 cohort. During his studies at the University of Melbourne the Joyce Mckenna travel scholarship was also awarded to complete postgraduate international studies. Louis completed his Master of Music, Screen Scoring at NYU during 2023. This was possible due to the generous support of the Brian May Scholarship and associated Brian May trust. Louis the recipient of the 2023 Peter Carpenter Award Fellowship through the BMI foundation. He looks forward to working with composers Tony Morales and Fil Eisler in this role.

 

Louis’ passion in writing music for screen has dominated my artistic output. Having scored such films as The People We Have Lost, WILCO, Bloodletting and Will you Find Me, Louis has gone on to build an important network of collaborators amongst the Melbourne film scene. Louis continues to develop his network across an international landscape in New York and Los Angeles. Recent projects include the documentary An Desert Is An Ocean created by Katherine Clary & Emily Sternlicht which was premiered at the 2023 Woodstock film festival, the short film Literally Me directed by Ezra Fax and short film 52 Minutos created by 2023 Student Academy Award-Nominee Jean Chapiro.

 

Louis’ compositional output is wide and varied having written for a large range of ensembles in many genres. These include orchestral, installation, chamber,  electronic, film and other media. As the recipient of the Athenaeum Club Composition prize and the Benjamin Northey award from the Ballarat Arts foundation, Louis has proven himself to be a well-received composer. In 2022 Louis was commissioned by the Australian National Academy of Music and Meg Cohen where his work Imperfect Cycles was performed and recorded. Louis composed and recorded the music and voice elements for the art installation piece Solastalgia which was performed at the 2020 Melbourne Fringe Festival and 2021 Adelaide Fringe festival. Recently Louis was commissioned by The New York University Symphony Orchestra who premiered his work Dark Chasm in April 2023.
